UBC sweeps the Paptac Conference in Montreal

February 2011,

This year’s UBC Pulp and Paper Centre graduate students took home the main honours at the Paptac graduate student seminar and poster sessions.  This year we had 7 students travel to Montreal to participate in the PAPTAC annual technical conference.  The students from this lab that participated include:

  • Ali Elahimehr (PhD student) Presentation: Simple numerical simulation of the LC Refiner plate surface interaction (winner of the Henry Bolker Award for the best presentation)
  • Frank Saville (PhD student) Presentation: Energy consumption in LC repulping (winner of the Henry Bolker Award for the second best presentation)
  • Jiyang Gao (PhD Student) Presentation: latency removal of mechanical pulps:Phenomenological Observations
  • Elham Albadvi (PhD student) Presentation: Application of the SmartChip to measure uniformity and heat transfer in Kraft Digesters
  • Ario Madani (PhD student) Poster: “Novel fractionation techniques: Fractionation of MFC suspension in a viscoplastic fluid” (winner of the Alkis Karnis Award for the second best poster presentation)
  • Jordan Mackenzie (MASc student) Poster: “Turbulent Drag Reduction in a Pulp Hydrocyclone Using Polymer Additives”
